Working for the Next Economic Superpower

Published Mar 26 2008 Updated Mar 25 2008

Amid the billions of dollars China has accumulated by underwriting our national debt comes a new initiative – a giant investment fund to be staffed in part by western financial services professionals seeking a global career opportunity.

The China Investment Corp.’s $200 billion sovereign-wealth fund is looking for “global talent” to join them in Beijing. Apparently cash isn’t an issue. In May the new fund sank $3 billion into the Blackstone Group, a private equity firm.

Here are some of the two dozen available positions:

  • Compliance Manager
  • Risk Control Manager
  • North America and Japan Market Equities Portfolio Manager
  • Emerging Market Equities Portfolio Manager
  • Fixed Income Portfolio Manager
  • Public Relations Manager
  • Senior IT Project Manager

Recession: A Tale of Two Classes, Skilled and Unskilled

Published Mar 19 2008 Updated Mar 19 2008

The US economy coughed up 63,000 jobs in February, its worst performance in five years. Despite President Bush’s recent attempt to downplay recession talk, the markets and media aren’t listening.

The New York Times said the recent jobs report “revealed widespread cracks in the nation’s labor market.”

What troubles economists is that employment is considered a lagging indicator, meaning that by the time jobs are slashed revenues have dropped, pipelines have slowed, and inventory is in oversupply.

I’m watching to see whether a long-term employment split emerges in which demand remains high for “skilled” workers, particularly in the tech and healthcare fields, while “unskilled” workers account for most of the new unemployed. Think of this split as skills warfare.

My Global Career Ascends to Alltop

Published Mar 11 2008 Updated Mar 10 2008

Just a quick note of gratitude to Guy Kawasaki for including My Global Career on Alltop.com, a cool new portal that showcases and samples the best of the web.

I met Guy several decades ago when he was an Apple Computer evangelist and I was a fledgling tech reporter in Silicon Valley. He was always a good sport about educating the press and fact-checking story details. In recent years Guy’s star has ascended as an author, blogger and venture capitalist.

Guy’s blog offers excellent career advice, particularly to budding entrepreneurs, inventors and executives. All the best tech & management gurus keep a sharp eye on leadership & talent management issues because without strong people skills, your chances of successful execution are nil. But then you knew that!

Let me know how you like Alltop.

Are You Having a Brazen Career?

Published Mar 03 2008 Updated Mar 03 2008

Penelope Trunk, the popular author & career advice columnist, has caught the Web 2.0 entrepreneurial bug. Fifty young bloggers have joined with her to create a a cool blog-based community and career advice site called Brazen Careerist.

The site is “an online career center aimed at Generation Y – young professionals who want to design and define their careers using the new rules for success.”

Trunk, who writes columns for the Boston Globe and Yahoo!, offers savvy advice in a breezy, engaging voice. It’s easy to see why GenY readers (among others) dig, er, enjoy her style.

You would expect a site like this to be a bit uneven, but perhaps it will mature into the Huffington Post of career sites. It could happen. The Wall Street Journal’s CareerJournal certainly offers excellent advice, but it’s often written and presented in a stodgy way. Trunk won’t fall into that trap.
