Great article!
another great way to use social networks advantages, without waisting too much time on it is by using 8hands which allows you to stay updated and respond quickly while not having to check all different profiles again and again.

I doubt that many of the social networks mushrooming up all over the place will be here in two or three years! Before investing a lot of time developing a network and filling out a profile you might want to see if the network has a business model and a future!

SoFlow recently closed on short notice leaving social networking refugees - a new phenomena but not nice when your contacts and forums entries disappear with a fortnight's notice. A couple of other networks with no business model have been acquired - eConozco is an example. A few seem to be be marooned and moribund with a few hundred members - I will not be so unkind as to name them but I know of several.

There will probably be four or five big networks, then some small regional or vertical niche players. But like reality TV the novelty will wear off and leave only the bigger players with proper business models and critical mass.

I work for Viadeo (www.viadeo.com), which together with our partner network Tianji (www.tianji.com) in China has over 2 million members and is (and has always been) profitable. If you are also considering European networks then you should look at Viadeo!

That's an interesting article, Con. Notworking sounds like a clever app. Actually, I think those 'pelts' as you put it are useful, but for some people it's a matter of learning to pay-it-forward and then seeing what comes back. I think the better way to judge a contact list is to compare it to a real-world organization. What percentage of people in an accounting group help a CPA develop his or her career? And so on.

Have you seen this article over at Forbes?
http://www.forbes.com/entrepreneurs/2007/08/16/news-corp-facebook-ent-hr-cx_ll_0816notworking.html
It's about an app called Notworking that lets people figure out how much money they're losing when they spend so much time on networking sites.

I think we’re starting to see a bit of a reaction to general networking sites for professionals. Sure you can collect a lot of pelts and show off how many people you are connected to but how many of those people are of any real use to you professionally? (Full disclosure: I work for www.spoke.com, a site that tries to connect business people in a much more focused way — in our case B2B sales, marketers and HR/recruiters. )
