Apologies for missing the rainbow of languages that surrounds us. Including local dialects of course. I should have ended with a nice Latin expression... Etcetera

"The composition of Singaporean [ethnic] Chinese are as follows:"

May I add: according to population size or numbers.

I may sound nitpicky or come across as overtly sensitive. But then, I am sure readers would *AGREE* with me that if one wants to disseminate factual information, one must be responsible enough to present as accurate an information as possible.

How would one feel if I were to say that Westerners are ignorant when it comes to Asia? An unfair albeit inaccurate statement? My point exactly.

"Singaporeans are multi-lingual. Aside from English they may speak Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, Hindi, or Tamil."

I thought this post is one of the most fair articles by Singapore-based expats until I came across the part on Cantonese. I would appreciate that Yves does a bit more research than tarring every ethnic Chinese being Cantonese. Perhaps based on his own experience in Canada where the Chinese are invariably Cantonese speakers?

The composition of Singaporean [ethnic] Chinese are as follows:
1. Hokkiens -- being the majority
2. Teochews
3. Cantonese
4. Hainanese and Hakka
5. Others

Besides and AGAIN, there are more Punjabi-speakers amongst the Singaporean [ethnic] Indians than Hindi-speakers.

Of course, you would or might dispute the above but then I am a 6th-generation *Singaporean*. So beat that :)

Hello Yves,

What a great blog entry. I'm actually considering a move from Korea after I finish my MBA later this year -- I've seriously been considering Singapore. I've been living in Korea for 5 years now! Phew! And it's about time to make a change, I think. If you don't mind I will probably use this blog entry as a reference when finished my thesis - about expats in Asia. My focus is on female expats in top-level management positions, actually, but your points on why chosing Singapore will be most helpful. All the best to you and much success!
