Are You Having a Brazen Career?

Published Mar 03 2008 Updated Mar 03 2008

Penelope Trunk, the popular author & career advice columnist, has caught the Web 2.0 entrepreneurial bug. Fifty young bloggers have joined with her to create a a cool blog-based community and career advice site called Brazen Careerist.

The site is “an online career center aimed at Generation Y - young professionals who want to design and define their careers using the new rules for success.”

Trunk, who writes columns for the Boston Globe and Yahoo!, offers savvy advice in a breezy, engaging voice. It’s easy to see why GenY readers (among others) dig, er, enjoy her style.

You would expect a site like this to be a bit uneven, but perhaps it will mature into the Huffington Post of career sites. It could happen. The Wall Street Journal’s CareerJournal certainly offers excellent advice, but it’s often written and presented in a stodgy way. Trunk won’t fall into that trap.

For fun, I explored some of the career advice from the lineup of young bloggers. I was amused by “The Office Newb’s” post called The Top 10 Most Annoying Office Habits of All Time. I’m only in violation of one of them right now and, no, it’s not clipping my nails at my desk or humming Tom Petty songs.

There’s an immediacy to all of this that has a certain visceral appeal. For instance, I happened across Eric Olson’s blog while perusing Brazen Careerist and it turns out that he accepted a new job today.

I’ll be watching to see how this venture develops, Penelope, and I wish you all the best.
