I would prefer to have friends at work, but ones that I've made from the job, not that have joined me. Those friends can continue to be friends in my personal life, but because we started out as work friends, a precedent is set and it's not as likely they will take things personally.

agree. Experienced the scenario first-hand. A few of us warm friends recently partnered in a business project, and when a few insisted to do business meetings at home and non-neutral locations due to their supposed convenience, the partnership got broken. To make things worse, the few who took it personal, 'applied war to the friendship', and friendship was also broken due to a small business dispute. I'm skipping the backstabbing part that led to former friends being enemies.. ;)

Some people, even those with post-graduate degrees from management schools, just seem to not know how to separate work/business from personal.
