My Global Career - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a global career?

Increasingly, we live, work and collaborate in a global village. There is no formal designation for — or definition of — a global worker. To us, the ‘acid test’ for a global career involves this situation:

  • Your position (or job function) involves collaboration or commerce with co-workers, employers, suppliers or customers located in a country other than your own.

Historically, global workers were employed (permanently or temporarily) by a company with operations in multiple countries. But competition is forcing companies to engage in a global hunt for talent, for suppliers, and for customers, even without establishing operations outside of their own country.

What is different or unique about global careers?

The “soft” advantage of global careers is that they’re often more interesting (please excuse the bias) than strictly domestic opportunities, they often pay better (we will gather evidence of this) and may provide insulation in a regional economic slump. Of course, global careers are often more challenging and demanding than domestic careers.

In most instances, a global worker has a local boss and his or her business culture is pretty familiar. What’s different or unfamiliar (at least to begin with) is the range or style of interaction with customers, suppliers and co-workers who may belong to a different culture (and may speak your language as a second language - if at all). The skills required of global workers are similar to those of domestic-bound workers, but their work habits often must change to fit global working situations. Global workers often find themselves adapting to new challenges for which they have had little or no preparation. My Global Career aims to level the playing field for you.

Does working in a global career require you to leave your city or your country?

No, global career opportunities exist in nearly every part of the world. Few workers pick up and move out of their city, much less their country, in search of global work experience. My Global Career gives you the information you need to succeed whether you decide to cast a local or global job search. At our inception, we feature job listings for U.S.-based, yet globally-connected careers and, soon, we will link to opportunities on distant shores. We will also put you in touch with recruiters who are scouting for global positions.

We will focus on giving you the tools and ideas you need to compete and win in the global job market. And we will point you to career advisors such as coaches, C.V. and résumé experts and recruiters who can create custom global career strategies for you.

What is a globally-connected company?

A globally-connected company meets one or more of the following criteria:

  • It operates in multiple countries; or
  • It has workers, contractors, suppliers or customers located in a country other than its primary home.

This universe of globally-connected companies is exponentially larger than the world’s pool of multinational companies (MNCs). That’s because there are more companies that play a role in the world’s economy than there are firms physically dispersed around the world.

Significantly, a globally-connected company is also likely to recruit for workers beyond its primary borders. A global enterprise is likely to take a more cosmopolitan view of hiring workers in far-flung locations and knitting them into a diverse, corporate culture. Global employers such as Pepsi often embrace ethnic diversity.
